Short on Height, Big on Hoops
They may be short on height, but Filipinos are never short on love for the game. From makeshift courts to packed arenas, basketball has become more than a sport—it’s a passion, a pastime, and sometimes, a full-blown NBA audition.
Basketball is a sport usually played by athletes built like skyscrapers, long arms, towering heights, and enough to make the rim look suspiciously close.
For Filipinos, with an average height of around 5’4, none of that seems to matter.
A little jump here, a little layup there, and suddenly every Filipino thinks they are one three-pointer away from the NBA.
With this much fascination and love for the sport, on has to wonder: Why do filipinos love the sport so much?
For one, it is fast, tactical, and never short of excitement. It’s no secret that Pinoys have this weird obsession with happiness. Even when calamities occur, Filipinos always find a way to smile. That must be why they love the sport so much, because one minute, you are calmly watching from the sidelines; the next, you are screaming because someone just sank a three-pointer. It is the kind of sport that keeps everyone on their toes, at the edge of their seats, and, more often than not, grinning from ear to ear.
But that’s not all, basketball is also very easy to play.
You do not need a fancy arena or expensive equipment. A hoop hanging above a concrete court is enough. Across the country, makeshift courts pop up in barangays, school grounds, and even the tiniest neighborhood corners. If there is a ball and a hoop, there is probably a game happening.
And unlike other sports where fans can feel worlds away from the athletes, basketball brings the action close. At the community level, players and spectators practically share the same space. This keeps the spectators practically bursting with excitement.
Most importantly, basketball belongs to everyone.
It starts in the barangay, continues in school courts, grows through local leagues, and eventually reaches professional arenas. From kids shooting hoops after class to athletes representing the country on the international stage, basketball gives Filipinos a reason to play, compete, cheer, and dream.
A low-maintenance sport where all you need is a ball, a hoop, and enough passion to shoot big and dream big.
For a sport where height is an advantage, Filipinos never let a few inches stand in their way. Because apparently, as long as you’re grinning from ear to ear and launching three-pointers at a hoop nailed to a concrete beam, you’re already convinced you’ve got what it takes to be better than an NBA player.
